Diana Salazar is a woman who has been plagued all of her life with the ability to move things with her mind. Now, engaged to Dr. Omar Santelmo, she is having dreams about herself set in 16th century colonial Mexico. More intriguing is the fact that her psychiatrist, Dr. Irene del Conde, was her rival in the dream for the love of another man. As the story unfolds, Diana realizes that it wasn't a dream, but a memory of a past life.

In the mid-19th century, in a time of Victorian morality, challenging the rules of the aristocracy to which she belongs, Matilde Peñalver Beristáin, falls in love with Adolfo Solís, an army soldier with no fortune; trusting that her father, Hilario – a fair and kind man – will let her marry him. But her mother, Augusta, is determined to force Matilde to marry a rich man to save the family from bankruptcy. Manuel Fuentes Guerra is the perfect candidate. He is an honourable and handsome young man who has just inherited a vast fortune. Augusta ignores the fact that Manuel is the illegitimate son of Joaquín Fuentes Guerra, a powerful landlord who raped a native girl, and who only recognised Manuel as his heir on his deathbed.

Using all kinds of intrigues, Augusta and her son Humberto send Adolfo to prison and convince Matilde to believe that he is married and has children. Overwhelmed and in despair, Matilde surrenders to her mother's pressure and agrees to marry Manuel, especially after she learns that he has paid the family's debts. Adolfo escapes from jail and immediately goes to look for his beloved Matilde, who has just married Manuel. Desperate, Adolfo manages to secretly speak with Matilde to clarify the misunderstandings. Swearing they will love each other forever, they decide to run away, but Manuel discovers them. Deeply hurt, Manuel is not willing to give her up. He forces her to leave with him, despite her love for Adolfo. After arriving at Manuel's hacienda, Matilde has to put up with Antonia, the former administrator's daughter, who is in love with Manuel.

Meanwhile, Adolfo, after an intense and frantic search finds Matilde and, intending to bring her back, poses as Manuel's new administrator. Manuel, unaware of Adolfo's real identity, sympathises with him and gives him a special, friendly treatment. In spite of the situation, Adolfo has to admit that Manuel is a noble, fair man. At that point, Manuel and Matilde discover that they have been victims of Augusta and Humberto's deceit. As time goes by, the subtle attention and Manuel's avid desire end up conquering Matilde's heart. Suddenly one day, she realises that the love she felt for Adolfo has disappeared and that she's fallen in love with Manuel. Matilde tells Adolfo the truth and urges him to leave.

Heartbroken, Adolfo accepts his reality and leaves the ranch the same day, that Matilde announces to her husband that she's pregnant. The couple's happiness does not last long. Manuel discovers who his new administrator was and, in an instant, everything falls apart. Matilde's pleas and explanations cannot convince Manuel, he feels betrayed once again and cannot forgive her. Driven by anger, Manuel doubts his paternity and throws Matilde out of the hacienda. Soon after that, he starts a compromising relationship with Antonia that will later make his reconciliation with Matilde more difficult. Manuel and Matilde's relationship will suffer and prosper during times of civil unrest, political and societal intrigue, and subterfuge. Only time will tell whether or not they find 'Real Love' with each other or with someone new.

Elena (Victoria Ruffo) is a poor young woman who while attending university to gain a degree in psychology, meets a rich young man named Ernesto (Sebastián Ligarde) whose only goal is to be with as many women as possible, through deception and on more than one occasion, drugs.

After this Elena refuses to see Ernesto again, and swears off ever falling in love again because she believes herself to be damaged because of Ernesto. Elena then focuses solely on her education and graduating so that she can work and help support her two sisters, Chelo (Cecilia Gabriela) and Talita (Anahi).

Chelo is her older sister who was forced to work in a cabaret to support her two younger sisters, Elena and Talita. After graduating she goes to interview at the house of the judge Juan Alberto Montiel (Saúl Lisazo) for the position of particular tutor for Juan Alberto's son who in the absence of his mother Silvia (Ana Patricia Rojo) has become unruly and disrespectful.

Upon first interviewing she is turned down because Juan Alberto believes her too young and inexperienced to properly care for his son. Juan Alberto's adopted mother is Rebeca (Julieta Bracho), who coincidentally is the mother of Ernesto, and therefore Ernesto and Juan Alberto are like brothers in the sense that they grew up together.

Rebeca believing that Juanito (Imanol), Juan Alberto's son, has been too unruly goes to Elena's house to ask her to take the job because no one else has been interested. Elena arrives at the big house and almost immediately has a profound effect on Juanito and little by little Juan Alberto begins to see a change in his son and realizes that it's all thanks to Elena.

Slowly the two, Elena and Juan Alberto, begin to fall in love and as in usual telenovela style there are a whole host of characters that seem adamant in ensuring that the two will not be happy together.

También se caracteriza por representar cada una de las personalidades infantiles, entre ellas resaltan el bromista, la traviesa, la romántica, el niño bueno, la niña sensible, el estudioso, el desordenado, la presumida, la gringa, el oriental, etc.

Gustavo Adolfo Almazán is a repressed millionaire. He is married to an invalid, Alba, and his life is pretty much dictated by his tyrannical mother, Ana María. One night, Iván, his rascal brother-in-law, brings two drunken cabaret singers to the Almazán household and they start a raucous party. This is how Gustavo Adolfo meets Fernanda, alias Colorina (on account of her red hair) with whom he'll share a passionate love affair. Ana María wants a grandchild and pays Colorina to have a baby with her son, on condition that she gives it to Alba to raise as her own. Although Fernanda initially agrees with the plan, she changes her mind after her son is born. Baby in arms, she runs back to her old neighborhood. There she is reunited with an old friend, whose wife has just deserted him, leaving their two little boys behind. Colorina gathers all these children and flees to Monterey where she starts a new life. Twenty years later, Fernanda is a respectable matron, the prosperous owner of a boutique. Her triplets are healthy, handsome boys all pursuing professional careers. Only now does the former Colorina decide to return to Mexico and introduce her sons to the Almazán family to see if they can guess which one is Gustavo Adolfo's son.
