A mysterious tormentor, Mephisto, appears to sever Swamp Thing's bond to the swamp and challenge his fears of living forever as a mock-encrusted mockery.

The swamp transports two Civil War soldiers to the present day, and one of them discovers that he apparently died a coward's death before he could see his newborn son.
