While on patrol, Hubert and Girwidz discover a motorcyclist who has crashed in a meadow. As they try to stop, their brakes fail and the patrol car also ends up in the grass. The officers escape with a scare, but the motorcyclist, Martin Fritz, is less fortunate—he is seriously injured and taken to intensive care. Back at the station, Christina and Chief Inspector Kaiser are dealing with an aggressive speeder whose car Hubert and Girwidz had impounded the day before.
It turns out that someone cut the brake lines on Martin Fritz's motorcycle—while a marten had been at work on the patrol car! Since the case is now considered attempted murder, Hubert and Girwidz don't want to wait for their vehicle to be repaired and instead borrow the impounded car from the speeder. They use it to drive to a countryside photo shoot, as Martin Fritz had been on his way back from a shoot for a farmers' calendar when the accident occurred.
The officers speculate that disputes among the young farmers could be the motive behind the sabotage. In the middle of the investigation, Hubert suddenly loses his hearing. Dr. Fuchs suspects that the marten repellent device Riedl installed in the patrol car is the cause of Hubert's hearing loss…
