Joe Knox (Edward Byrnes) quits a gang of cattle rustlers when they ruthlessly slay a young husband rushing for a doctor to save his ill wife.

Marshal Troop reluctantly makes Owny O'Reilly a deputy as a reward for fishing a dead outlaw out of a river. Owny, in turn, takes his new job too seriously and almost costs the marshal his life.
