Bach investigates the death of a waiter who was impaled after a fall from his apartment. Balthazar is called to assist but is sidetracked by a woman claiming she was mugged outside of the Forensic Institute.
Devastated by the death of a friend, Balthazar has left his job in Paris and spent the past six months sailing around the Atlantic, vowing never to touch a corpse again. His resolve is tested when he discovers a dead body near a remote island.
After a high-speed chase in a restricted military zone results in their arrest, Balthazar and Bach are forced to recount to authorities the events that led them there. The day before, Balthazar and Bach had begun investigating a massacre at a bowling alley that left seven dead and one survivor.
