A wealthy cattleman, Louis Strome, captures Paladin and two other men on suspicion that one of them was with his wife. Strome shot his wife when the man fled, and now he wants to kill the man he blames for her death.

Paladin comes upon a woman and her baby abandoned by their wagonmaster because he thinks they have typhoid. The only way to determine if if they're truly sick is to bring in a nearby female doctor to determine if they need treatment.
