Paladin is hired to determine why a local man's brain-damaged daughter disappeared for a week, apparently at the hands of a local monster.

Paladin rides out to bring in a gunfighter, and watches the man Juan gun down Paladin's would-be employer. An amnesty is declared and Juan swears to obey it, convincing Paladin. However, when Juan returns home, he discovers that his fiance has chosen another man.
