An astrology buff hires Paladin to track down Seth Carter, a member of a tontine lottery that he paid to enter. However, everyone who knows where Seth is dies mysteriously after Paladin finds them.

Paladin takes refuge from a storm at a halfway house where Marshal Jim Buell is holding a man prisoner. Jim insists that men are coming for his prisoner, and he plans to stop them or die trying.
