Hoby rides into the town of Caldwell to tell a drunken father that his son--convicted of murder and imprisoned for life--is coming to visit. The news worries two men who know the truth about the murder.
Hoby ends up shooting a 16-year-old boy in the back while tracking down a prowler. The townspeople think that Hoby acted wrongly, and the boy's father swears vengeance.
The Rangers send Hoby to a town to investigate the lynching of a half-breed. The townspeople claim that it was all a set-up to get the suspected killer to talk, and the horse bolted. But Hoby soon suspects that it was a second murder to cover the first.
