Sheldon Black is training Dean Lowell for the position of managing editor of the Morning Chronicle. He learns that a wartime friend of Lowell's is condemned to die, but that Lowell has turned a deaf ear to the man's pleas for help. Puzzled, Black orders Lowell to write a story about the condemned man.

Once again panic-stricken Maggie Athenson calls the police for protection from Cassidy, a suave swindler who she says has threatened her life.
Even though Maggie's previous pleas had been false alarms, policemen Howell and Brophy decide to follow through.
