Karen takes temporary custody of a smart-aleck murder witness, a wily preteen girl whose incarcerated father seeks an early parole to dodge a death threat and collect a stash of stolen money.

Karen, who has hazy memories of a motel shoot-out that left her injured, is attracted to a charter-boat owner (Patrick Dempsey) who may be wanted by the FBI.
