Could this spell the beginning of the end for such massive events, or does it simply suggest a shift in the companies that choose to participate? With the number of inbound Muslim visitors increasing, the demand for food that they can eat while in Japan is also on the rise. By the time the Olympics are held in Tokyo next year, the size of the halal food market is expected to be 2.5 times larger than it was just 8 years ago. For example, we show how Japanese restaurants manage to get around halal restrictions that prevent them from using standard soy sauces. We also feature an alternative strategy, which leaves the decision making to Muslim consumers by providing detailed information on the food products and letting the buyer judge whether it is acceptable or not.
