On his final day as a University Professor, Bill is visited by a young student who looks remarkably like the girl he fell in love with before the war. He begins to reminisce with her about his missing years in Changi from which, emotionally, he will never recover.

Eddie celebrates his Birthday as always, with a ritualistic shave. He remembers other birthdays including the terror of a birthday in Changi when the Japanese morale officer went mad.
