An unidentified burnt body draws Inspector Gently and Detective Sergeant Bacchus into the shadowy world of IRA gun-running, and into direct opposition with a ruthless Special Branch officer.
One-off drama set in 1964 about an old-school detective trying to come to terms with a time when the lines between the police and criminals have become blurred, when the proliferation of drugs is about to change the face of policing for ever and when Britain's youth stand on the brink of a social and sexual revolution.
Gently's wife has been killed in a hit and run and Gently suspects his nemesis Joe Webster, who's just been released from jail. Gently, disillusioned with the police force, follows Webster up to Northumberland after he discovers that he's attended the funeral of a young biker.
When further members of the gang are also killed Gently finds he's not the only man seeking vengeance. Along with his Machiavellian sidekick, Bacchus, they race to find their suspect before the killer strikes again.
When a returning German POW is found dead in the harbour of a small fishing village, Gently and Bacchus find themselves investigating past grievances and present violence.
