It is Fireman Sam's birthday and everyone is preparing for a surprise party for him. Norman Price has to keep him away until it is time. Meanwhile, Dusty is sniffing around the buffet table and knocks over the birthday cake. The candles start a fire in Bella's cafe.

Sam receives new equipment for fighting fires. It proves to be useful when careless campers fail to put out their fires in the fields. Trevor tries to take the children swimming but his bus breaks down on the way and whilst he fixes it, the youngsters go off to explore. When they try to lead Dusty back to the bus, they are swallowed up in a pall of smoke from the burning fields. Fireman Sam arrives with his new piece of equipment to save the day.
