Linoleum flooring is replaced with Saltillo tiles; wood-paneled walls are covered with colorful stucco; outdated cabinetry is swapped with rustic knotty alder and topped with sleek countertops, and a worn kitchen table is exchanged for a handcrafted metal one. To top off the new appliances, a range hood is covered with rustic wood.

This family room addition is stuck in the '50s. Vinyl floor, wood paneling and an outdated fireplace add to the overall retro feel. Chicago homeowners spend most of their time in this room and would like to see it transformed into an updated space that's respectful to the rest of the home's classic 1940s bungalow architecture. A dated stone fireplace is replaced with brick veneer, an acoustic ceiling is removed and a built-in banquette adds a craftsman-style dining area. Finally, a window & full light door are added along with new lighting to make room brighter.
