Paladin takes refuge from a storm at a halfway house where Marshal Jim Buell is holding a man prisoner. Jim insists that men are coming for his prisoner, and he plans to stop them or die trying.

A woman hires Paladin to find her mother, nicknamed "Blue Dollar Alice." Paladin soon tracks Alice to Codeyville and discovers how she got her nickname.
