Season 1 begins in the Autumn of 1942 with two storylines running parallel on land and at sea: the submarine warfare is becoming increasingly brutal and the Resistance begins to gain influence in La Rochelle.
U-612 with their new commander Klaus Hoffmann is ready for its maiden voyage and the crew has to cope with the cramped and claustrophobic conditions under water, as they are physically and mentally pushed to their limits. Meanwhile, at the port of La Rochelle, the world of Simone Strasser spirals out of control as she is engulfed in a dangerous liaison and forbidden love, torn between her loyalty for Germany and the Resistance.
With news of Gluck's kidnapping reaching La Rochelle, Forster is on the warpath and everyone is in the firing line, including Simone.
Details of what happened to the U-612 reach the shore and Forster has the task of breaking the news to Simone.
Trapped below the angry, ominous rumble of a destroyer, the outlook is bleak for the crew of U-612. The inexperienced but eager young men wanted a battle, but they may have taken on more than they bargained for.
The crew welcomes the departure of Greenwood, but their new guest comes as a surprise. Meanwhile, Carla and Simone's relationship continues to develop.
Following the explosion at La Rochelle, the Mayor is ordered to make some harsh decisions under the watchful eye of Gluck and Forster.
As U-612 completes the first part of their mission, the crew is reeling from a tragic death. Meanwhile on land, Gluck organises a parade for the return of Captain Becker and his men.
Aboard U-612, the men are adjusting to their new lives. Meanwhile in La Rochelle, Simone struggles to piece together what happened the previous evening.
U-boat Captain Ulrich Wrangel and his men are caught in battle with a US Frigate. Meanwhile, in occupied France, young Captain Klaus Hoffmann worries that he won't be able to live up to his famous father's reputation.
It's now December 1942, and U-boat ace Johannes von Reinhartz is handed a new secret mission to transport three saboteurs to the US East Coast on board U-822. When his loyalty is questioned, U-612 -- with its CO Wrangel -- is sent in pursuit.
Having escaped certain death out on the Atlantic, former U-612 CO Hoffmann finds shelter in New York with Sam Greenwood, who owes his life to Hoffmann. He meets sleazy German-born lawyer Berger, but will Berger help Hoffmann to return home and clear his name?
Back in La Rochelle, Simone and her roommate Margot battle to secure an escape route for a Jewish family, but Forster, Head of the Gestapo, is watching their every move.
