Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale is set in a contemporary world where witchcraft is real. It takes place in the idyllic English town of Sanctuary, where for hundreds of years witches have lived peacefully, as valued members of society. Until now... At the heart of the story is Sarah Fenn, Sanctuary's resident witch, on whom the town relies to solve their problems when conventional remedies have failed. When local teen rugby star, Dan Whithall, dies tragically in an apparent accident, his death exposes a terrifying undercurrent of suspicion and fear towards Sarah and her teenage daughter, Harper. Mother of the dead boy, Abigail, once Sarah's closest friend, is wracked with grief, and to avenge her son's death, launches a modern-day witch-hunt to get "justice", no matter what the cost.
With Sanctuary cut off from the outside world, Abigail has free rein to exact the ultimate revenge on Sarah and Harper.
Abigail seeks to clear Dan's name by whipping up anti-witch feeling amidst a mystery virus and evidence of dark magic.
Following the dunking, Sarah decides to cast a spell over the whole of Sanctuary. A revelation pushes Abi into action.
Harper's accusations put suspicion onto her and Sarah, and a memorial vigil incites ill feeling.
An expert confirms that magic was present at the crime scene. Harper makes a shocking revelation to Sarah who warns that her disclosure, if revealed to the police, will make her a suspect. An accusation from Harper sends Abigail into revenge mode.
When non-witch daughter Harper is accused of murder, Sarah must use her magic to prove her innocence; fueled by local resentments, suspicions transfer to mother and daughter, while Abigail tries to blackmail Sarah with an extraordinary demand.
When a teen sports star dies, the community of Sanctuary is shattered; DCI Knight expects a straightforward investigation but the response of Harper, daughter of a local witch, leads her to suspect there's more to his death than meets the eye.
Season two picks up a year after the traumatic events of season one. Sarah Fenn and her daughter Harper are in hiding in Scotland, concealing Harper's extraordinary powers, but a dark cloud is descending as recent anti-witch legislation has increased hate crimes. As Sarah worries worse is to come, she's presented with a dramatic ultimatum - return to Sanctuary as the secret eyes and ears of the witch ruling body, The Moot, or have her magic bound. Determined to retain her powers and protect Harper at all costs, Sarah returns home just as a mysterious murder takes place, also drawing DCI Maggie Knight back to Sanctuary.
