Set in 1963, the film revolves around Melody Ellison, an African-American girl living in Detroit, Michigan with her mother Frances and her grandfather Frank. Early on she and her family faced racial inequality in their hometown, whether being bullied at school with a white student named Donald along with his friends for her ethnicity, or be wrongfully accused of shoplifting at a clothing store where Melody's mother works.

Individuals involved in creating Melody speak about the emotions, themes and hopes the Civil Rights Movement inspired. At school, a beauty pageant is coming up, but basketball superstar Julie doesn't think she's the pageant type. That is until her mom shows her an article about a Miss America whose prize money paid for law school. Soon after, Julie signs up. She's quickly embarrassed when Amanda, Alison and Angela mock her talent -- fancy dribbling. Still, Julie remains true to herself, especially during the interview portion. She wins 1st Runner Up, but feels like the winner when her best friend Ivy reveals how Julie inspired her to think differently.
When stargazer Maryellen Larkin learns that a rocket scientist will visit her classroom and be introduced by the student who writes the best essay on "The Wonder of Space," she can't wait to enter the contest--even after a classmate's disparaging remark that girls and outer space don't mix. To really make a splash, Maryellen foregoes the essay and draws a comic book about a fearless adventurer,"Astro Girl." But will her daring comic earn her a place in the stars?
