A woman whom Jess once loved arrives on a stagecoach, and asks Jess to help her run away from her husband and get to Mexico.

When his leg is injured in a cougar trap, he's rescued by Slim and Andy, and stays at the Sherman ranch while he heals. Based on his checkered past, Jess thinks he may be the person Caulder is there to kill.

Jess' brother-in-law has deserted the Army and shows up at the ranch looking for his help getting to Canada.
