Spy/Master is set during the height of the Cold War and covers a week in the life of fictional character Victor Godeanu, the right-hand man and closest advisor to Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. However, Godeanu is also a secret agent for the KGB and must escape Romania and Ceaușescu before his cover is blown. With only one shot at staying alive, he uses a diplomatic trip to Germany as a springboard to the United States. Helped by an undercover Stasi agent and former flame, and an up-and-coming CIA agent, Godeanu must elude the KGB and his own country's spooks, fully aware that his defection is putting his family back home in mortal danger.
The German police and CIA are left scrambling when a second target emerges. Amid the chaos, Victor and Frank make a last-ditch effort for America.
Victor demands the Americans get a message to Ileana and leverages Ingrid's intel about an imminent bomb attack in Bonn.
As Nicolae fumes over reports of a defection, Frank moves Victor to the protection of the U.S. embassy. Later, Mircea and Carmen attempt to cast doubts on Victor's true motivations.
Victor nervously waits for Frank in the hideout as news of a missing diplomat spreads. Frank tries to pressure the CIA - but his strategy may backfire.
Armed with damning evidence, Mircea outs Victor to Nicolae and Elena. Later, Victor gets troubling information from his old flame Ingrid, and Frank tries to sidestep official channels when Victor is called back to Bucharest.
Victor finds himself in grave danger amid Ceaușescu's growing paranoia – and news that his nemesis is closing in on his secret. In Germany on a diplomatic mission, Victor decides to take his chance with the Americans.
