Rob and Rylan's Grand Tour follows Rob and Rylan - presenters, friends, and men who love the finer things in life - as they discover the greatest art treasures in Italy, finding out more about themselves along the way.
Together, they retrace the steps of countless English aristocrats who took the Grand Tour - the original gap year - leaving behind the confines of British society for freedom and discovery abroad. But can the Grand Tour still work its magic today?
Marking the 200th anniversary of Byron's death, Rob and Rylan will draw from the poet's extensive poems and letters to guide them, alongside the diaries of others who made the trip.
In Rome, Rob and Rylan turn themselves into a painting by Caravaggio, try to get the Grand Tourist look, and discover the shocking story of the singers known as 'castrati'.
Rob and Rylan arrive in the majestic Renaissance city of Florence, the city where art changed the world.
The duo set out to discover how Grand Tourists tried to uncover the secrets of the Renaissance, getting up close and personal with Michelangelo's David, sampling the offal food Grand Tourists ate and discovering a pioneering female Renaissance artist. And Rylan realises he's closer to a Renaissance man than he thinks.
Rob and Rylan begin their journey in Venice – coming face-to-face with one of the largest paintings on canvas in the world, Tintoretto‘s Il Paradiso.
They also discover the artistic legacy of Canaletto, before heading to Murano, an island in the Venetian lagoon, to try glass-blowing. Rob attempts to fulfil a lifelong dream, by conducting Vivaldi's Four Seasons in the church where it was first performed, while Rylan discovers the hidden side of Venice's famous Carnival. Finally, both Rob and Rylan step out of their comfort zone by donning drag and taking to the city's Grand Canal, alongside twenty other drag queens.
On their second outing for BBC Arts, the pair follow in the footsteps of Rob's favourite author E.M. Forster, who a century ago wrote A Passage to India and changed the way the world saw the country. As they embark on their own passage to India and discover how the country's ancient wisdom, art and culture can challenge them both personally, intellectually and physically.
