María is determined to stay in La Mancha with Nicolás and her future baby. Guillermo warns that he has called the police; Manuel's motorcycle has been tampered with. The police are looking for the main suspect and for the toxic employee, they blame Gabi, the only one in the factory with access to these chemicals and with obvious reasons for doing so. Justa accuses José, but he denies it until the widow discovers that her left hand is burned. Justo tells María, but they need more proof and they must join together to get it. Claudia arrives, determined to prove Gabi's innocence. The three women hatch a plan to prove José's guilt. Meanwhile, María goes into labor and gives birth to her daughter: Manuela. Claudia doubts whether she should leave again, but María informs her that half of the farm belongs to her and offers to set up a cooperative; If they join forces, they will be able to move the land forward.
José and Manuel reach an agreement, Manuel wants to share what he earns with Claudia, but she has left and Gabi blames him for it. Manuel wants to deliver the agreed wheat, but José has gambled, the French to whom he was going to sell it have broken the deal and he must fire workers to pay him, but the landowner rejects him. Inés blackmails Custodio, if he doesn't get married, she will tell everything, but in addition, Custodio receives an envelope from José asking him to stay away from Guillermo forever. José, not satisfied with the wheat move, plots something more serious, tampering with Manuel's motorcycle.
Manuel cannot forgive María for hiding her doubts about her future paternity from him and he leaves to resolve the other conflict, that of her disputed land that Claudia claims. Guillermo tries to approach Custodio, but he rejects him with contempt. but at night, and without saying a word, he throws himself into Guillermo's arms. Manuel goes to Madrid in search of a lawyer and a job in case he loses the farm. He reminds Maria that he must continue paying her debt. Luisa arrives to visit and her actress airs revolutionize the town. Claudia, without evidence, loses her suit as heir and decides to leave.
José arrives in La Mancha with the seed of doubt about his paternity sown by Justa. María tries to convince him that it is not his and José tries to get her to return to him, but although he finally leaves, the Andalusian woman becomes worried about this unexpected arrival. Ramón fades away. Dr. Calderón examines him and reminds him of his heart injury and the short time he has left to live; a secret that both have been keeping silent for a long time. Ramón surprises María and Manuel by giving them some land that he has bought, he tells them about his illness and how little time he has left to live. Concha introduces herself to the old man to inform him that her sister Carmen was faithful to her until she died and that Claudia, the bastard girl, is hers. José assures all the workers that they will remain employed and introduces them to the new guard, Justa.
María returns with Manuel to La Mancha, the car breaks down and they spend the night on a property owned by a foreign couple who receive them delicately. Maria and Manuel give themselves over to love for the first time. Upon return, Manuel asks Justa to leave the farm and she swallows her resentment. María and Pepita deduce that Claudia is pregnant when she sees how nauseated she is. María meets Justa and although she does not forgive her for her betrayal, she tries to maintain a certain cordiality, but Justa does not give up and takes advantage of Claudia's wedding to snoop around the Cervantes' house.
Justa approaches Manuel, but she warns him that their thing is over; Justa finds a photo of María and José and shows it to Ramón to suggest that María is not clean wheat. Ramón shows the photo to Manuel when he suggests taking him to court to get custody of his son. Claudia has fainted in the field and the doctor informs her that she is pregnant, she has to make a decision, have it or abort. Guillermo improves and returns home. José displays his charms, he is willing to do anything to win back María. He is honest and takes advantage of her fragility to end up seducing her, since María has no news about Manuel.
The Civil Guard locates Llanos' body, but neighbors also roam the area and rumors about what could have happened spread through the town. At the funeral, Alonso, the deceased's brother, appears and blames Manuel for the misfortune. The Civil Guard takes Manuel into custody. He can be sentenced to death if they fail to prove his innocence. María receives an unexpected visit from Alonso. She comes to propose collaborating with him and doing justice. According to him, the Cervantes deceived her sister. If she accepts, she can have a large share and be free. Maria sets a trap and the police arrest the real murderer of Llanos and Manuel is free. In private, Manuel tries to approach María but they are interrupted by a phone call; Guillermo, Maria's brother, has typhus. He is ready for the trip, looks for Manuel to take him to the station, but surprises him in the stable with Justa.
Manuel perceives a change in attitude in his wife. Maria knows that he could have killed her in the forest, but she didn't and she is no longer afraid of him. They reach a deal, they decide to deceive Ramón, until the debts of María's family are paid off. Afterwards, she promises him that she will leave. Justa accuses Manuel of a certain rejection and stirs up her hornet's nest by setting a trap for María. She warns Ramón that perhaps the marriage is not consummating and the landowner decides to take her to a doctor to confirm it. Ramón becomes enraged with Mercedes' poor performance and fires her. Claudia intervenes to support her and ends the same. Gabi and Manuel decide to hatch a plan to resolve the conflict between Ramon and the day laborers. The landowner decides to forgive them, but when he discovers that his dog has died of poisoning, he fires them all, convinced that it was them. Nicolás escapes, upon hearing his father and his uncle evaluate his admission after diagnosing him with epilepsy.
María meets Justa, the one who takes care of the house and who teaches María to do all the housework. Ramón scolds Manuel, he knows that he has not slept with his new wife and reminds him of his obligations or else his son will suffer. At the harvest, tension grows between the day laborers, Claudia turns her vindictive anger against the landowner's new wife whom she intimidates by reminding her that her husband may be a murderer. María approaches the tavern where she meets Pepita, the owner's wife, and tells her about the rumors about what happened to Llanos, Manuel's first wife. María finds a letter that Llanos wrote to her lover. She confesses that she is pregnant and that they must plan for her escape. Nicolás, Manuel's son, suffers an attack, when he wakes up, he confesses that the last time he saw her mother was when her father took her to the forest.
Ramón Cervantes, a rich Castilian landowner, arrives in a humble town in Almería, looking for a wife. María, the eldest sister of the family, decides to sacrifice herself to ensure a better future for her family. María has been missing for years a boyfriend who went to Germany and whom she promised to wait for, but about whom she has not known anything for a long time. At the ceremony she discovers with horror that her wedding is by proxy and that the person she is really marrying is his nephew, Manuel. Furthermore, she discovers that Manuel has a son and that his wife disappeared under strange circumstances.
