Melinda Gordon has always had the ability to see and talk to dead people. These earth bound spirits, the ones who have yet to cross over to the other side, seek Melinda's help in communicating with the living and resolving unfinished business.

When a teenage psychiatric patient, Natalie, escapes, her rebellious ghost twin asks Melinda for help, claiming Natalie doesn't belong in the clinic. Their parents placed her there for believing she can still feel Zoë's presence.
