When during a difficult pregnancy, God tells Rebekah that her older twin son will serve the younger, Isaac stands by that the older Esau is the rightful heir. However, as the boys grow into men, Rebekah realizes that she must defy and deceive Isaac to fulfill God's plan to ensure that Jacob becomes the rightful heir.

Sarah feels incomplete without the child that has been promised to her and her husband, Abraham, by God. After braving isolation, famine, the ire of Pharaoh, and several more years of barrenness, she resorts to her own plan to bring a child into the world involving her maidservant Hagar and Abraham.
