The past brings investigator Yana Knyazeva back to her hometown of Zarechny, which has been shaken by a series of brutal murders. She cannot remain on the sidelines: the case is somehow connected to the orphanage where Knyazeva grew up and which she is desperately trying to forget. Yana suspects that a maniac is behind the crimes, but none of the local police take her theory seriously. Only Captain Denis Simonov decides to help with the investigation, despite their obvious mutual animosity. The closer the partners get to solving the mystery, the more tangled their relationship becomes, and the seemingly quiet town hides its secrets deeper and deeper.
Yana is interrogating Roma and is almost sure that he is the killer. But after Oksana's confession, she comes up with a version that shocks even Yana herself.
The investigation reaches a dead end, when suddenly divers find Kostik's shoes at the bottom of the river. Yana suspects that Roma is the surviving boy.
Yana is under arrest, and Denis is looking for people who were planning to adopt Kostya. Among them is Oleg, whom Denis considers the main suspect.
Denis is sure that after Ignat's death, the murders will stop. Meanwhile, an unknown person who calls himself a killer gets in touch with Yana.
Yana and Denis are in touch with Kostik's parents and believe that all the deaths may be connected to his disappearance. Denis suspects Ignat.
The similar details of the Zarechny murders lead Yana to believe that one person is behind them. Denis suggests they conduct the investigation together.
No one but Yana believes that Gleb is innocent. The case is wanted to be closed, but she continues to dig in the hope of luring Denis to her side.
Investigator Yana is removed from cases in the regional center. Later, she learns about a mass murder in her hometown of Zarechny and sets out to find the perpetrator.
