A peculiar character named Philbert Potts arrives in Gold Hill, claiming to be the owner of the mine. An old property deed verifies his ownership. Potts promises that if he doesn't find gold, the children will be allowed to continue using the school; however, if he finds gold, they will have to abandon the building. Moses is convinced that some kind of "miracle" will happen to ensure the children don't have to leave the school.
