Call the Midwife
As Christmas approaches, a bout of influenza sweeps through both Nonnatus House and the Turner family. When Mother Mildred declares that God is calling her to set up a branch house in the Outer Hebrides, it seems an ideal opportunity for the nuns and midwives to convalesce in the bracing Scottish air. As they recover, they will also be able to help the island, where there is a nursing and doctor shortage.
Sister Monica Joan associates the Outer Hebrides with St Eustace's White Stag, a symbol of Christ, and is thrilled at the idea of travelling there. However, she soon discovers to her annoyance that she is being left behind with Sister Hilda and Sister Frances.
Within a week, Dr Turner, Shelagh, Mother Mildred, Trixie, Sister Julienne, Valerie and Lucille set off on their journey to the Outer Hebrides, where they are to stay in a freezing cold converted church. As the team set about establishing an antenatal clinic and treating the local population, they must battle not only the weather and bleak terrain but also the suspicions of some of the islanders.
Meanwhile, in Poplar, Reggie has come home for Christmas and finds one of Violet's presents for him: the Book of Guinness World Records. Inspired by the triumphs of others, Reggie decides that he too will try to break a world record.
Sister Hilda digs deep to give her terminally-ill patient her final wish whilst the Turners must prepare to say goodbye to May. Fred and Reggie are keeping secrets from each other.
Mother Mildred decides it's time for Sister Frances to attend her first solo birth. Trixie consoles a patient who discovers she has gonorrhea.
Mother Mildred returns to Nonnatus while Nurse Crane is in hospital, and provides care for a retired dock worker whose former job has taken its toll on his health.
Poplar welcomes a brand new cervical cancer-screening clinic to the Institute and Dr Turner, Shelagh and Trixie are pleased to be part of the exciting new venture.
Sister Julienne is drawn into a conflict between an estranged mother and daughter, both of whom are pregnant. Trixie's keep fit class is chosen to host a special event.
Valerie helps a struggling mother accept her son's birth defect. The Turners oversee a measles vaccination trial at the clinic as the team prepare for the Whitsun bank holiday.
Lucille helps elderly hoarder Clarice Millgrove who is struggling to keep her independence. Sister Hilda and the team work hard to help a Ghanaian family with an undiagnosed illness.
Nonnatus House welcomes two new nuns. Valerie deals with a shocking case that arrives unexpectedly, and the other midwives must handle a complicated multiple birth.
Call The Midwife explores complex medical and personal situations on the midwifery and district nursing rounds. It is now 1969, and the period drama returns with Poplar coping with the popularity of home births under the auspices of the Sisters. Season 13 will also see stories of poor housing challenges and health issues for the nurses, midwives, and nuns of the Nonnatus House.
As the unfamiliar terrain of the Hebrides stretches the team to the utmost at Christmas, their return to Poplar sees them braving a landscape that feels suddenly unfamiliar. Budgets are being cut, and hospitals reorganised. Terraced houses are being demolished, and traditional family structures torn apart. There are wrecking balls everywhere, and it's up to Sister Julienne, and the midwives and medics of Nonnatus House, to help find a way out of the rubble. When they themselves come under threat, their job becomes even harder.
In series seven, the nuns and nurses find themselves tested, both personally and professionally, as never before. It's 1963 and all around them they see the old East End vanishing, as slum clearances make way for bold new tower blocks to accommodate expanding communities. Their work brings them into contact with a wide range of challenging issues, from Leprosy to Stroke, Cataracts, and unmarried mothers.
