It is an abridged movie retelling of the Alabasta Arc.

The Straw Hat Pirates travel to Alabasta, the desert island and home of Nefertari Vivi. They find the country in the middle of a revolution. Crocodile, the country's hero, secretly used his criminal organization Baroque Works, to undermine the citizens trust in Cobra, Vivi's father and head of the Kingdom of Sand, in order to seize the throne and the country's hidden secret for himself. The crew now has to cross the desert, stop the revolution, save thousands of lives from the Baroque Works hidden bombers, and most of all, defeat Crocodile, one of the mighty Shichibukai.

Sanji uses the Devil's leg to even the odds.

The Straw Hats arrive on Mecha Island, which is rumoured to contain an enormous treasure. The crew teams up with the island's chief and inventor named Ratchet to solve the mystery, but Ratchet has other plans for the island in mind.

Unlike the other specials, this story takes place in an alternate reality version of 19th century Japan (in "The Grand Jipangu" (グランドジパング Gurando Jipangu?), an alternate version of The Grand Line as opposed to simply being hour-long filler episodes.

The story is divided into two halves: in the first, Buggy the Clown makes trouble in the town where Detective Luffy is stationed, and in the second a mysterious girl named Vivi appears. These stories feature cameos from several minor characters in the normal series.

Surprisingly the "Oyabun" (Boss) specials did not stop there as five more specials were made following the first one, mostly as Christmas and New Years specials as well as fillers once in awhile.

The Straw Hats decide to take a break from their adventures and arrive at a resort island, where they participate in a series of challenges. But a dark secret lurks on the island and the crew begins to argue and split up. Can Luffy overcome the crushing despair and hopelessness of being alone and bring the crew back together?
