Kogoro is hired by a horror novelist to find out with whom his wife is having an affair. Later the same evening, the man is killed in a ritualistic manner and all of the house guests turn out to have motives.

Kogoro is asked to investigate a murder threat against Rika Okano, a respected artist who is up for an award. The threat is simple: If Rika receives the award, she will be murdered.
