The doors of the Sistine Chapel were sealed Wednesday as the papal conclave got underway. After three hours and fifteen minutes, black smoke billowed from the chimney above the chapel, signaling the cardinals had not yet selected a new pope. NBC News' Lester Holt reports from the Vatican. In recent weeks, flights at Newark Airport have been delayed four to fourteen hours. Today, the FAA announced they'll take action including leaning heavily on controller trainees who are certified in specific positions. The agency also warned it could take years to fix the issues. NBC News' Tom Costello reports. Former Memphis police officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith were acquitted on all state charges following an eight-day trial, stemming from the 2023 beating death of Tyre Nichols. The former officers are expected to be sentenced this summer after they were convicted of lesser charges in their federal case. NBC News' Priscilla Thompson reports.  School officials say they are dealing with a disruption that happened in Butler Library. Just days ahead of finals, demonstrations flooded the main library. The school says protestors who would not provide identification and disperse could face possible arrest. NBC News' Emilie Ikeda reports. India and Pakistan are escalating their conflict. It comes after India struck Pakistani territory in retaliation for a terror attack. NBC News' Richard Engel reports.

A current controller for Newark's airspace tells NBC News' Tom Costello that last week's loss of communications with planes has happened two other times since August. Tonight, President Trump said, ‘never say never' regarding Canada becoming the 51st state, as Canada's new prime minister vowed the country is ‘not for sale.' President Trump also announced that Iran-backed Houthi rebels said that they will stop attacking U.S. ships in the Mideast. Tensions are rising in Kashmir after India launched strikes at Pakistan-controlled portions of the contested territory. Pakistan claims to have shot down two Indian planes. It follows the killing of dozens of Indians in an Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir; they blame on militants backed by Pakistan. Pakistan denies any role. NBC News' Keir Simmons reports on the new wave of violence tonight.  NBC News' Gabe Gutierrez reports. Four women who say they worked for Robinson as housekeepers allege the music legend sexually assaulted them dozens of times over a period of years. Robinson has not replied to request for comment. NBC News' Kate Snow reports. The Vatican released new images showing the inside of the Sistine Chapel, ready for 133 cardinal electors to gather for the highly secret meeting to choose a new pope. The cardinals will take a vow of secrecy and be cut off from the world until two-thirds of electors agree on a new pope. NBC News' Lester Holt reports from the Vatican. There were massive lines at DMVs across the country, as the TSA's deadline nears for travelers to bring Real ID to the airport. NBC News' Maggie Vespa reports. In Louisville, a truck driver dangled from a highway after a crash. First responders raced to the scene rescuing him from the terrifying incident. The Louisville Fire Department chief says he's witnessed this kind of operation once before. NBC News' Emilie Ikeda has more. Police have arrested 48-year-old Jimmy Wayne Carwyle on suspicion of felony vandalism after authorities say he rammed his car into the gate of Jennifer Aniston's Bel Air Mansion while the "Friends" actress was home. Troubling details are now emerging from what appear to be the suspect's Facebook posts referencing Aniston over the past year. NBC News' Liz Kreutz reports.

Tens of thousands of people descended on St Peter's Square to witness and celebrate the new pope. Sharing the moment with them was NBC's Molly Hunter who brings us the sights and sounds of this historic day. The Trump administration is sharing new plans to change the air traffic control system. The plan will likely take three to four years and cost billions of dollars. The proposed changes include a brand-new radio system, fiber optic data feeds and new radars. NBC News' Tom Costello reports from Washington, D.C. The home security video shows a car that investigators believe was Bryan Kohberger's making repeated passes near a house where four Idaho college students were stabbed to death. The footage obtained by "Dateline," which has never before been seen publicly offers a new angle into the turbulent events around the time prosecutors believe the students were murdered. Keith Morrison reports. Friends of Pope Leo XIV are celebrating his election tonight. The first American pope was born in Chicago. NBC News' Shaquille Brewster reports. On the second day of the conclave, Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the first-ever American pope. White smoke billowed out of the chimney above the Sistine Chapel Thursday evening. The U.S. and U.K. announced a new trade agreement to lower trade barriers for each country. It's the first trade agreement since President Trump paused most of his tariffs, in order to negotiate new deals with other countries. NBC News' Gabe Gutierrez reports. Pope Leo XIV was born in Chicago and worked extensively in Peru and Italy. His brother says he loves to play Wordle and recently watched the movie Conclave. NBC News' Anne Thompson reports he was close to Pope Francis and wants a church that builds bridges.
