Major storylines included John Sugden's saviour complex, April Windsor and Dylan Penders being exploited by drug dealers Celia Daniels and Ray Walters, Charity Dingle agreeing to be a surrogate for Sarah Sugden and Jacob Gallagher only for the baby to turn out to be her own as the result of a one night stand with Ross Barton, Ruby Miligan murdering her rapist father Anthony Fox and the Dingle family helping her cover it up, Joe Tate's quest for a kidney transplant leading to the limo crash that caused the deaths of Leyla Harding, Amy Barton and Suzy Merton, the affair between Joe and Dawn Fletcher and the whodunnit attack on Joe, the return of Robert Sugden and the arrival of his crazed prison husband Kev Townsend, who was later revealed to be the father of Ross Barton's long lost brother Lewis, Vinny Dingle coming to terms with his sexuality and the disappearance of Bear Wolf and the reveal that he was being held as a slave by Celia and Ray.

Major storylines included Maya Stepney's grooming of Jacob Gallagher, Kim Tate's release from prison and the introduction of her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter, Moira Dingle's affair with husband Cain's secret son Nate Robinson, Victoria Barton's rape and consequent pregnancy, Robert Sugden's revenge against Victoria's rapist and his departure, the death of Lisa Dingle, Paddy Kirk discovering his real father, the breakup of Marlon and Jessie Dingle's marriage, the fire at the factory caused by Kerry and Amy Wyatt which killed Frank Clayton, and Harriet Finch's stalker who turned out to be her ex Will Taylor.
2009 was Emmerdale's 38th year. At the start of the year the producer Anita Turner and executive producer Keith Richardson were both still in charge of the programme, though Gavin Blyth and Steve Frost took over each respective roles from March onwards.
Major storylines included Debbie Dingle and Jasmine Thomas being sent to prison for their parts in Shane Doyle's death, Sally Spode's stalking of Ashley Thomas, Jack Sugden's offscreen death in Spain, the returns of Cain Dingle and Charity Tate and the arrival of three new families - the Wyldes, the Bartons and the Sharmas.
2008 was Emmerdale's 37th year. Production was overseen by Kathleen Beedles until March when she handed her duties to Anita Turner.

103 episodes were broadcast during the year. Major storylines included the programme's first murder, wedding and birth as the pace of the programme began to increase. Local teenager Sharon Crossthwaite (an early appearance from award-winning actress and director Louise Jameson) suffered at the hands of the unhinged Jim Latimer in a murder which rocked the village at the start of the year. New couple Frank Blakey and Janie Harker married in March and Peggy Skilbeck gave birth to twins in April, marking the first birth and marriage in the programme. Things would take a devastating turn, however, when Peggy collapsed and died of a brain haemorrhage in July, leaving Matt a single father. Other storylines included Jack Sugden getting a new companion in tramp Trash and Joe Sugden finding romance with Trash's daughter, Penny Golightly. The wheels were set in motion for partnership between Henry Wilks and Amos Brearly at The Woolpack as Henry covered for Amos following his brother's death in October and shoplifting shopkeeper Alison Gibbons arrived in the village from Liverpool and took over the Beckindale Shop in the summer with Henry Wilks showing great interest in marrying her.
