We are in the midst of the mid-Lent festivities, this great masquerade of costumed people who parade from house to house to celebrate and try to fool their hosts about their identity... It is during these celebrations that the esteemed businessman and patron of the arts, Claude Goyette, nicknamed the Baron, is murdered at point-blank range by a strange masked figure.
The day after Mid-Lent, the Baron is found dead on La Grave. Surprenant and Savoie inform the family of the death while conducting their investigation. They encounter resistance from the victim's relatives, who all seem to be hiding something. In Montreal, Gingras learns that Charlot was a convicted criminal. Carmen makes a compromising discovery. The net is closing in on the Baron's inner circle. Surprenant is convinced that a link connects the two murders.
Surprenant agrees to help Gingras solve the murder of a man from the Magdalen Islands found dead in Verdun. The investigation leads him to Martine Boudreau, the victim's cousin and ex-partner of Claude "the Baron" Goyette, a patron of the arts who is as influential as he is enigmatic. Surprenant meets the Baron and his entourage as they prepare for the mysterious Mid-Lent masked ball. Asselin reveals information to Surprenant that hits him hard, concerning a joint operation with the Gaspé police station.
