The Collins family have a party on New Year's Eve, but Gordon is out getting drunk elsewhere. Mike comes to visit Karen, but ends up playing cards with Barry and Terry.

Having Lucy home for Christmas doesn't improve Annabelle's mood, but can she be persuaded to see a doctor? Mike hears a few tales when he returns home on leave from the Army.

Heather dashes back to Ireland, Marie and Michelle discover that Petra has sent them a Christmas card, and Terry discovers a more profitable use for their perfume.

As Christmas approaches, Heather battles to save her client's business, Marie receives news that George has been injured and taken to hospital, Bobby and Matty deliver Christmas hampers, and Barry and Terry try to sell dodgy perfume.

Polly and Sydney disturb Heather when she has more than enough work to do at home. Harry is asked to dress up as Father Christmas, and Samantha returns home a little earlier than expected.

Harry discovers that some of his Gnomes are up Alan's Christmas tree, and that his is the only garden without a sapling. Marie and Michelle face a gruesome task, Heather and Polly gain a third lodger.

When Alan refuses to tell Harry why he has dug a pit, he starts to fill it in. Heather spends a day at Mr Johnston's printing firm in Billinge and agrees to let Polly come and stay with her.

Marie decides to contact Petra by putting an ad in the paper. Heather is invited to the firms annual dinner with Roger and feels that she can't tell her boss that her marriage has broken up.

Barry and Terry go to the beach to burn the Jaguar, but discover that they do not have quite enough petrol. When they return with some, they find that the car is sinking into the sand.

Paul tries to pacify Jack when he discovers that Gordon is the person who has the stolen drum-box. It seems that everyone on the Close is having a little trouble with their vehicles.

When Karen arrives home late with Mike, Bobby decides to throw him out. Karen and Bobby then have an argument over whether or not it is appropriate for her to give away the bingo winnings.

Sheila and Karen go out to play some bingo and Karen ends up winning £75. Alan continues his search for the missing disk and cannot help but blame Gordon when it eventually turns up damaged.

Barry works on Bobby's car. Gordon and Mark go to a recording studio to hand in their demo tape. Gordon asks the receptionist for a date, but she turns him down.

When Harry's attention is diverted, Damon and Gizzmo start moving his Gnomes around. Barry helps Samantha retrieve a valuable disk Alan has accidentally dropped behind a cabinet, but then she spills coffee on it.

Paul and Heather see Gizzmo being beaten up by his brother. Damon fights with Mark, and wins, but Bobby tells him off.

Harry and Edna move in. While Harry tells Paul about his boxing medals, Mark steals them - but Damon and Gizzmo are blamed.

The Jacksons' bonfire has some surprising contents. Marie finds that her kitchen is full of water. Mike tells Karen that he is joining the army.

Bobby tries to negotiate a fair settlement, Barry and Terry need some Cable, and Marie's washing machine needs to be repaired.

Sydney takes Heather and Roger out for the day in an attempt to reconcile them. Sheila puts forward strong arguments in her interview, but returns home to bad news.

Sheila is invited to appear on television, and George buys Paul's cardigan at the bring and buy sale.

Sheila is disappointed when the newspaper coverage of the pocket line is dominated by Samantha. Terry and Barry are not the only ones selling jeans....

Annabelle gets carried away, Sheila joins the picket line, and Barry and Terry discover that some of their jeans have gone missing.

Heather talks to Will about her marriage, and prepares for life on her own. Annabelle takes Sheila for a driving lesson.

While Heather visits her parents in Belfast, Roger returns to the Close and almost burns her house down.

Barry and Terry's attempts to store their knock-off jeans are continually thwarted. Alan discovers who bit his bottom. The residents meet their new neighbours - Edna and Harry Cross.

Sheila tries to set up an action committee. Barry tries to tempt Terry. Alan's bottom is bitten during a rugby match.

Both Samantha and Val think a message Alan has left is for them. Sydney prepares to escort Heather, and Gizzmo is beaten up.

Roger gets a shock when he goes to see Diane again. Bobby and Sheila plan their 25th wedding anniversary party.

Marie finds a letter from Petra, and calls the police. Heather hears conclusive proof that Roger is having an affair with Diane, and throws him out.

Barry goes shopping for Bobby and Sheila's anniversary. Bobby discusses the factory closure with George Williams, and Heather and Roger fight. Annabelle has an unexpected guest.

Heather receives her exam results, but Roger is too busy with Diane to ask her if she has passed.

Damon and his mates find a new way of making mischief. Alan has a setback in his bid to earn more than Samantha.

Paul has to deal with a problematic trainee. Diane and Heather finally come face-to-face.

On Paul's first day in his new job, he is called up for jury service. Roger is reluctant to commit himself to going on a holiday to Corfu with Heather. In return for a favour, Alan lets Val move in with him for a while.

Diane wants Roger to go away on holiday with him, so he tells Heather more lies. Damon gets into more trouble, and Lucy leaves to spend six months in France.

Sheila is convinced that Val is not really unable to speak English, and proves it by having Alan pretend to by a fluent Chinese speaker. Diane gives Roger an expensive tie-pin for services rendered.

A parcel arrives for Heather, but it might not distract her from questioning Roger about his movements. Barry returns home, but he is not alone. Lucy and Karen receive their O-level results, and there are more birthday celebrations in the Close.

Maureen Lomax arrives to collect the kidney machine money from Sheila, who can only give her a cheque. Heather accuses Roger of being unfaithful.

Annabelle and Paul suggest that Lucy goes to France for six months, and she agrees. Heather discovers that Roger isn't where he should be - but she doesn't know where he is. Sheila decides that if Bobby isn't going to fight, she will...

A policewoman tells Michelle that Petra may have committed suicide. Paul convinces Lucy to come home. A chance remark cause Heather to become suspicious of Roger.

Gordon reveals that Lucy is staying at Janice's. Mr Johnston thinks Heather is a secretary, then discovers that she is his accountant. Marie is convinced that Petra will come home.

Petra's car is found, and Alan mistakes the detective who arrives to speak to Michelle for the flasher. Lucy storms out after Annabelle slaps her during an argument.

Damon and Gizzmo play a trick on Karen and Susi while they are sunbathing. Bobby persuades Sheila to take a holiday in Anglesey. Petra returns home from the shops, packs a suitcase, and leaves home.

Roger helps to mend Michelle's cassette recorder - but Damon is equally keen to repair Samantha's broken window.

Sheila is upset at the possibility that Bobby may have to seek work abroad, and even more upset when Barry leaves for London with her kidney fund money. Roger is worried when he is spotted dining out with his rich client. 

The closure of the factory is announced, and redundancy is now only 90 days away for Bobby and Jonah. Meanwhile, someone is lurking in the undergrowth and observing the residents of the Close... 

Roger tells Heather a convincing lie about where he was last night. Lucy and Gordon discover that the family holiday will have to be postponed.

Gordon chooses a jacket that will "express his personality". Lucy loses her knickers. Roger misses out on a partnership, but Paul is offered a job, and decides to accept it.

Practising her driving alone, Sheila crashes into Alan's car. Petra believes Gavin has returned from the dead, but it's someone else.

When Barry refuses to do Petra's decorating, Terry volunteers. Bobby is concerned when Alan Torenson questions him, fearing that the secret report has been leaked.

Gordon and Lucy are uncomfortable about how close Annabelle seems to be with Robin Tate. Karen, Pauline and Susi go into town to investigate starting up a new venture.

Gordon goes to look at Alan's computer. Jonah tries to placate Annabelle and Paul after Lucy's arrest. Roger reacts angrily to Heather's impulsive spending.

Petra tries to start facing the future. Heather and Roger are meant to be celebrating, but he doesn't come home. Karen gets her CSE results.

As her final exams approach, the pressure is getting to Heather - and when she walks out after an argument with Roger, he rings another woman.... Alan and Samantha encourage Bobby to teach Sheila to drive. Annabelle is not convinced that their troubles with Lucy are over.

Paul goes to the police station, and Lucy is released with a caution. Damon and Elsa decide just to be good friends. 

Damon goes skating with Elsa, who then goes off with her mates. Lucy goes on a demonstration instead of sitting an exam. 

Paul has another interview at the Dole office, Roger and Heather argue about work and starting a family.

Marie and Michelle visit Petra who is in hospital after having a miscarriage, Barry offers to give them a lift home. Heather and Roger talk about their marriage, but Roger is summoned into work.

Barry and Petra try to sneak out of the hotel early with the hope of being able to escape the company of Alan and Samantha. When Petra begins to feel unwell, she thinks it's the baby.

Michelle and the Grants awaken to discover that Petra and Barry have snuck off to the Isle of Man for a holiday. However, it is revealed that Alan and Samantha are off on a holiday to the same place.

A chance meeting with Barry affects Alan's holiday plans. Sheila fears that she and Bobby will have less time together, even though the factory closure seems to be an even more likely event.

George Williams gives Bobby confidential and disturbing news about the factory's future, and Sheila dreads the conflicts that may follow. Michelle attempts to heal the rift between Barry and Petra, but Marie may not approve of their holiday plans.

Now that his ribs are broken, Roger is reconciled with Heather. Annabelle goes to a district ratepayers' meeting, and Paul has another interview.

Paul is called for a job interview, but decides not to take the position because he feels it is beneath his capabilities. Heather argues with Roger, who is then run over by a bus.

Barry pays Karen to cook lunch for him and Petra - but she goes out and it is burned. Tempers flare and Petra storms out, doubting that Barry really wants to be with her.

Gordon attempts to convincingly order a drink in a pub. Barry's confrontation with Dave results in Petra quitting her job.

The Collins family celebrate Annabelle's birthday, while Bobby plans to take Sheila to London for the final of the F.A. Cup. Damon is sent home from school, suffering from Love Sickness - and marriage still doesn't appeal to Samantha.

Although Annabelle visits Sheila to remind her about the ratepayers' meeting, Roger is the only one who turns up. Samantha increases Sheila's fears about Bobby's job by telling her she suspects Fairbanks will be closing soon.

Heather and Polly play scrabble, and compare their prospects. Lucy is disappointed with the small turnout at the demonstration. Petra and Barry are both annoyed when they discover that Marie spoke to Sheila about them.

Against Michelle's advice, Marie visits Sheila to explain why Barry is becoming too involved with Petra. Lucy and Gordon hatch a plot to enable her to go to the CND rally with Janice. Someone comes to stay with Heather while Roger is away.

When Jonah's aggression in court leads to his rights of access to his son becoming restricted, Bobby persuades him to appeal. Paul plans to sell his car, and Alan asks Samantha to marry him.

Bobby has some advice for Jonah, whose one-night-stand with Jean leaves him feeling lonely. Gordon tells Annabelle she is turning into Brookside's "iron lady" - but can she persuade Alan to join the ratepayers' association?

Heather is studying for her exams and feeling tetchy. Lucy decides to go on a CND rally. When she hears that Barry and Terry are planning to go into business together, Michelle suggests hat Petra could do their secretarial work.

Barry resorts to drastic action when his boss, Ted, confronts him about removing materials from the building site. Alan chats to Michelle, and invites her to come and look at his computer. Lucy makes a new friend.

Bobby and Sheila have a fun evening out, followed by a full-scale row with Karen when she reveals that she no longer intends to go to church.

Paul suspects Barry of stealing his paving stones. Samantha resists Alan's invitation to move into the bungalow with him. Karen is threatened with suspension from school for swearing at a teacher.

Damon and his friends become a little bit uneasy about Alan, however their fears prove to be unfounded. The Huntingdon's party does not go quite as well as they had originally planned.

Alan measures the bungalow, but he isn't sure he can find anyone who knows enough geography to help him out. Roger invites everyone for a drink to celebrate his and Sydney's Birthdays. Lucy practises for her stint on `What the Papers Say'.

After Michelle expresses doubts that they should be spending so much time together, Petra and Barry talk things over. Sydney makes Damon pay when he catches him doing something naughty in church.

It's time for church, but Karen and Damon have gone missing. Sydney sees Barry laying paving stones for Petra and asks whether he could get some for Roger. Lucy drops Gordon right in it.

Roger's parents visit for Easter, and his father's offer to help around the house does not go down too well. Gordon suggests that Lucy should give Jonathan a taste of his own medicine.

The Huntington's suspect that they have another intruder, and they're right. Damon is stranded in the bungalow after arguing with his mates. Lucy tells Gordon of her doubts about her relationship with Jonathan.

Sheila waits at home while Bobby and some of his mates endlessly drink and drivel on after-hours about nothing of any significance or interest, making Sheila quite unhappy along the way.

When Petra's boss makes a pass at her, Michelle suggests that Petra tells him that she is pregnant. There are differing views over how a ratepayers' association should and should not be run.

Redundancy in the Grant household forces Damon and Karen to think of different ways of earning cash. Barry brightens the day by bringing home some paint for the planned redecoration.

The Huntington's are burgled again, and Roger sets off around the Close to interrogate his neighbours. The Educational Welfare Officer visits the Grants to find out why Damon has been missing school.

Annabelle tries to convince Paul that he cannot claim free meals for Gordon at his private school. Barry and Frank plan a surprise for Petra, but she has a bigger surprise for Barry.

Damon steams open the wrong letter. Barry and Frank are horrified by Petra's attitude and her determination to get Gavin completely out of her life.

Matty and Teresa have dinner with Bobby and Sheila, and end up arguing over redundancies. Meanwhile, Heather and Roger dine with Derek and Angela and their other guests - and Derek hints to Heather that Roger's career could depend on how co-operative she is.

Annabelle has an unexpected visitor, while Roger and Heather battle over Derek's dinner party. Damon steals Karen's Valentine card, and takes it to show to everyone at school.

Gordon is invited to an all-night party, but Paul wants him to be home by 10.30pm. Matty Nolan receives a redundancy notice, and is disappointed when Bobby seems unwilling to use his influence to help him. Carol is not impressed when she meets Barry's bit on the touchline.

Barry tries to set his relationship with Carol on a firmer footing. Redundancies look certain to occur, as one plant at Bobby's work is to be closed down. Sheila seeks advice from her priest.

Lucy attends a meeting at school, expresses her grievances and tries to stir up some action. Sheila is not convinced that Karen should be on the pill and goes to speak to her doctor. Jeff reveals that Duane has been badly beaten up.

Annabelle becomes exasperated when her car is caught behind Gavin's funeral cortège and she runs out of petrol. Paul resolves to be a little more decisive in order to find himself a job.

Petra awakens in the morning to discover that Gavin has died in his bed during the night. Petra has to be comforted by her brother-in-law George, her neighbours Roger and Heather, and especially, Barry.

Sheila is told that Damon has been playing truant, Gavin and Petra have a blazing row and he storms out, telling her that she will see him in the morning, if she's lucky. Petra's response is to throw a tray through the glass door after him.

Barry's denials when Eric confronts him after hearing rumours of his liaisons with Irene seem convincing enough, but he is not as good at explaining to Sheila why he has contraceptive pills in his bedroom.

Barry has to back down in a heated argument with Victor, but then finds himself being propositioned by Eric's wife. Sheila finds contraceptives in his bedroom and is determined to find out whose they are.

Roger's attempt to take up jogging are not successful, the boys' school reports are not good so Damon has some serious grovelling to do, and Sheila confronts Annie, although Barry has no sympathy.

Damon almost reveals that Karen is on the pill, Paul wants Annabelle to stay at home but she would much rather be doing some supply teaching, and Sheila receives more bad news at work.

Annie's financial worries begin to trouble Sheila, and Barry discovers that he may also have some money problems. Lucy is amused that, without Paul knowing, Annabelle is looking for work.

Karen and Sheila go shopping while the rest of the family go to watch a football match, Roger joins a badminton club and Paul suggests a trip to the Lakes to visit Annabelle's mother, but Lucy refuses to go.

Paul jumps to some incorrect conclusions, Petra becomes even more obsessed about having a baby, Sheila has to makes a difficult decision, and Damon invites some of his friends over.

Paul has a job interview, and is confident that he has done well. Annabelle starts making clothes for Lucy as part of her economy drive. Bobby goes back to work after the strike and finds that some of his co-workers are angry.
